Hi everyone! I know everybody is getting excited about my Fiber Arts shop reopening. Life likes to throw a wrench here and there though. I have had a few time consuming stresses come up that I have to take care of. This takes precious time away from preparing for the Grand Reopening.

I plan on starting with a well stocked shop full of all sorts of fiber goodies! Opening a month later allows me time to continue to set up shop and make items for the shop. This really is a total rebranding. You are going to be pretty excited I imagine about what will be in stock. I won't tell you everything but I will give you some hints to whet your appetites.

  • Hand Dyed Yarns & Combed Tops
  • Creative Batts (some of my old favorites just might be there as well as some new)
  • Themed Packages much like my SAL/KALs but not quite
  • Monthly SAL/KAL - spaces will be limited every month.
  • Some new yarns I have been working on just for you!
  • Goodies that are sure to make you squee with joy
That is really all I can say right now. I will be updating my blog and Facebook page regularly. Right now my Ravelry Group is in full function. I have a chat section, a place to show off goodies, and more. Though I will be opening in October, I am already accepting custom requests. Please email me your requests. Get your request in now to have your items ready in shop when I open. Talk to you soon!

Its official Ever Improving Me, SAL/KAL themed New Begginings or Fresh Start

I would like to start my business by hosting a SAL/KAL with the theme of ”New Beginnings” or ”Fresh Start”. I am starting the dying this weekend. I would love to see some inspiration photos. I like the theme of starting over or new beginnings. I love this idea, which came from YarnMagic on Ravelry, of making some yarn and fiber combos to get started again. I think that would be a really fun start. I would love to see what interesting and creative creations that would be made by combining the yarn, and fiber together. I am thinking it could be spun up and knitting into something, used for weaving, or some random idea you are inspired to make!

The idea is wide open so please feel free to post anything your mind sees as fitting in this topic. I would love to see photos, songs, books, or discussion on the topic for the SAL/KAL. I will be posting photos of my dyeing this weekend too.

Teal Dyed Wool and Yarn - Stove top (batch 2)

Since I still had plenty of dye in the water and I did not want to waste it I added another cup of vinegar and turned the burned back up to 7. Then I went looking for other stuff to dye. The second batch contained: 2.25oz of Cordial, a skein of 3.3 oz and approximately 150 yards of Riverstone Wool Yarn that is very soft, and a 4oz skein of a smooth blank wool yarn.

I added each item one at a time with no presoak. I let each one settle in before adding the next. The first in was the 3.3oz skein, next the 4oz skein and finally the cordial roving. I turned the burner off and covered it with a lid and left it alone.

The second batch sat for a good 30 minutes (and then some as I was dealing with the washing of the Tunis in between) maybe more like 45 minutes. I ended up putting it back on the burner about half way through to maintain the heat keeping it on low. This time the dye exhausted so I only needed one wash and 2 rinses.

I used the Unicorn Power Scour in the wash, the first rinse got the Unicorn Fiber Rinse, the last rinse was just tap water. I rolled them individually in the towel and put them on the rack to dry. This is what I have so far.

I have decided to take my wool to another level!

For the last year or so (give or take some time), I have been playing around with wool. I started out unraveling wool yarns from sweaters. That was very relaxing and fun. I started dyeing them fun colors in my kitchen. I made some interesting hats and scarves from them. I have always loved color so the dyeing was my favorite part. I bought some undyed yarns to dye a fantastic range of colors. I used food coloring, koolaid, natural dyes, professional dyes. The possibilities were fantastic.

I love yarns too. I moved on to handspun yarns from others. I finally decided to give that a try. So I got myself a drop spindle and gave it a whirl. I had found a new love. I started buying rovings and batts. The next step of course was a set of hand cards and my very own washed wool to dye and card.

Did you know that wool as I had known it was not the wool that I would that I would find? Ever new wool I got was different. It had a different feel. It had a different look. It had a different smell. Also I had to redefine my idea of clean.

Wool can be clean and still look a mess. It can be full of VM all those fun bits of hay, burs, crap (literally). For some clean means it has had a cool soak. For some it was well skirted. For some it was taken as a whole and tossed into a wash.

So these days for the most part I am working with raw wool, skirted or not depended on where I get it. I will take this wool, and turn it into clean, lovely natural or dyed locks, batts, rovings, and handspun yarns.

Its all an adventure and I learn a little bit each time I do it. I will be posting pictures along the way and sharing tips and tricks I learn. Please feel free to share your as well.
